WAYNE MAVIN GROOMED AND SEXUALLY ABUSED 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN BLYTH AND WAS JAILED

In May 2018, Wayne Mavin, a resident of Blyth, was released back into the community after serving part of his sentence for a series of serious sexual offenses involving a young girl. His criminal activities and subsequent legal proceedings have drawn significant attention due to the disturbing nature of his crimes and the high-profile sentencing.

Back in April 2016, Mavin, aged 24 at the time, appeared before Newcastle Crown Court to admit to grooming and engaging in sexual activities with a 12-year-old girl. The charges against him included causing or inciting a child under 14 to participate in sexual acts, engaging in sexual contact with a child under 14, grooming a young girl for sexual purposes, and inciting her to send indecent images. The court was informed that Mavin had used social media platforms to communicate with the girl, who was only 12 years old at the time, during the previous year.

According to court records, the grooming process led to a meeting between Mavin and the young girl, which resulted in oral sexual contact. The court also heard that Mavin had encouraged the girl to send him a topless photograph, further demonstrating his predatory behavior. The case revealed that the grooming began when the girl was just 12, and the interactions escalated to sexual acts.

On the day of sentencing, Mavin was initially given a six-year prison term. However, this was reduced to four years after he pleaded guilty, demonstrating some level of remorse or cooperation. The judge, Stephen Earl, described Mavin’s actions as an “appalling act of grooming” and emphasized the serious risk he posed to young female children. The court was shown a screenshot of a disturbing selfie taken by Mavin after his court appearance, which he captioned with a provocative message, “does this face look bothered,” accompanied by a tearful face emoji, the words “no, couldn’t give a ****,” and a smiley face. Prosecutor Jonathan Devlin presented this image to the court, highlighting the additional stress and trauma inflicted on the victim and her family.

Furthermore, the court was told that Mavin had encouraged the girl, who was only 12 when they first started communicating, to send him a topless picture, illustrating the manipulative and exploitative nature of his conduct. As part of his sentence, Mavin was ordered to sign the sex offenders register and to abide by a lifelong sexual harm prevention order. Judge Earl made it clear that Mavin’s actions were deeply disturbing and unacceptable, especially given the vulnerability of his young victim.

In May 2016, Mavin had already admitted to grooming and having sexual contact with the same girl, who was then 13 years old. During that hearing, he pleaded guilty to similar charges, including causing or inciting a child under 14 to engage in sexual activity, engaging in sexual acts with a minor, grooming her for sexual contact, and inciting her to send indecent images. The court was told that Mavin’s grooming began when the girl was just 12, and it culminated in a meeting that resulted in oral sexual contact. He was placed on the sex offenders register and was explicitly banned from having unsupervised access to any female under the age of 18.

Following his release in May 2018, Mavin returned to Blyth, where he remains under strict supervision and monitoring, including the lifelong sexual harm prevention order. His case underscores the ongoing dangers posed by individuals who exploit social media to target vulnerable minors and highlights the importance of vigilance and robust legal measures to protect children from such predatory behavior.
