AN ABERDARE MAN HAS BEEN JAILED FOR 30 WEEKS FOR ASSAULTING HIS PARTNER OF 34 YEARS.
Wayne Lewis, 56, from Penywaun, was convicted and sentenced at Merthyr Crown Court on January 21, 2021.The court also approved a police request for a restraining order, which will prevent him from contacting the victim for three years after he is released.
The victim, a woman aged 51, described enduring a lengthy period of abuse by Lewis.
She told the court that his drunkenness often made him aggressive, which led him to repeatedly threaten her at her home.
On 4th January, 2021, she made a 999 call while barricading herself in a bedroom, fearing for her safety after Lewis had arrived outside her house and shattered a window.
Officers arrived quickly and detained him.
Five days prior, Lewis had disturbed her early in the morning at around 6am by knocking on her front door before forcing entry through a back door.
He assaulted her, slapping her and grabbing her by the throat, warning he could kill her if he chose.
During the assault, she was crying and crouched in a chair when he hit her with the handle of a kitchen knife stolen from a drawer, then threatened to stab himself.
Lewis admitted to assault and criminal damage and pleaded guilty to these charges.
Detective Inspector Christopher Gray stated: “For many years, the victim suffered at the hands of this man, and one call to the police put an end to that.
We heard from the victim how her aggressor would assault her in ways that wouldn’t leave a mark.
He would threaten to harm himself and make her believe she was at fault.
“These are all the hallmarks of a domestic abuse perpetrator – they are cunning and controlling and they play on the fear and the loyalty of their victims.
“The victim in this case no longer has to suffer and I hope that other victims out there – and there are many – can read this and understand that they too, do not have to suffer.” “It’s important that other victims see that help is available, and that they do not have to live with or suffer at the hands of abusive partners anymore.”
