VINCENT MITCHELL SHOCKS CORK AND WEXFORD WITH PAST PAEDOPHILE CRIMES

In a disturbing revelation, it has emerged that Vincent Mitchell, a man with a long history of sexual offenses, spent years working in various educational institutions across Ireland, including Cork and Wexford, despite his criminal past. The Irish Sunday People has uncovered that Mitchell, aged 49, who is also known as Vincent Unsworth Mitchell, was able to gain access to children through his employment in schools and entertainment venues, raising serious concerns about background checks and safeguarding measures.

Mitchell’s criminal record in Britain is well-documented, with a series of convictions for sex offenses against minors. However, it was only recently that authorities in Ireland revealed that he also has a conviction within this country. In October 1994, Mitchell was sentenced to eight months in prison in Cork after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy. The assault occurred as Mitchell was working at a funfair, where he had bought the young victim sweets and minerals before attacking him on the way back from a golf club. The incident was witnessed by a member of the public, leading to his arrest. During the court proceedings, Mitchell admitted to taking medication to control his urges, but he stated it was ineffective.

Despite his criminal history, Mitchell managed to secure employment in roles that placed him in close proximity to children. His work in funfairs across southern Ireland was well-known, but it is only now that the full extent of his involvement in educational settings has come to light. After purchasing a house near Midleton, Co Cork, Mitchell set up computer programs in local schools, which allowed him to work directly with students. When Irish Gardaí identified his background, they promptly warned local headmasters, who responded by dismissing him from their schools. A local mother expressed her outrage, questioning the lack of thorough background checks, saying, “It is outrageous that a man like this ever got inside a school. Why didn’t they carry out some kind of background checks?”

Following these events, Mitchell left Ireland for a period, prompting Gardaí to alert Interpol and authorities in Czechoslovakia, where he was believed to have moved. However, he later returned to Ireland, appearing in Curricloe, Co Wexford, several weeks ago. The Irish Sunday People previously reported that local residents were horrified upon discovering his identity, with plans to march on his caravan. Tensions escalated when the community learned of his past as a child abuser, leading to Gardaí intervening to calm the angry crowd.

Gardaí subsequently warned Mitchell that his safety could no longer be guaranteed and advised him to leave the area. Unfortunately, he had already disappeared after being evicted from his caravan by the owner. A local father of three expressed his disbelief and anger, stating, “Word spread through the village like wildfire. We just could not believe we had a man like that in our village. People wanted to storm around to the site to tell him they did not want him here.”

Gardaí commented on the limitations they face in such cases, explaining that Ireland currently lacks a paedophile register, which hampers their ability to control the movement of known offenders. “He has done nothing wrong in this country at this moment, and it’s not in our power to move him on,” a Garda spokesperson said. They added that they intended to give Mitchell a friendly warning before he left.

Mitchell had been collecting unemployment benefits in the area for several weeks and had appeared multiple times over the years working as a repairman for a funfair operator. A Garda source revealed, “We know he worked in many schools around Munster and possibly elsewhere. When we found out, we alerted the principals.” Despite efforts to monitor his whereabouts, since his departure from Curricloe, his current location remains unknown. The Gardaí suspect he could still be in Ireland.

A representative from a Co Cork school told the Irish Sunday People that they had no knowledge of Mitchell’s past as a paedophile, claiming they had received no complaints about him. Meanwhile, a teachers’ union spokesperson emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive vetting procedures for anyone entering school premises, whether they are external contractors or part-time staff, to prevent similar incidents in the future.
