VICTOR STOKES FROM REDNAL SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO ENGLISH BULL TERRIER LENNY IN BIRMINGHAM
In a disturbing case of animal neglect, Victor Stokes, a resident of Rednal, Birmingham, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to his elderly English bull terrier, Lenny. The incident came to light in May 2016 when RSPCA inspector Boris Lasserre was called to Stokes's residence on Devon Road, Rubery, after reports indicated that the dog was in a severely neglected state.Upon arrival, Inspector Lasserre was confronted with a heartbreaking scene. Lenny, a ten-year-old dog, was confined within the confines of a small hallway, lying on a dirty, damp duvet inside a dog cage that served as his bed. The inspector described the environment as deplorable, with a strong, nauseating stench of rotting flesh emanating from the untreated tumour on Lenny’s jaw. The entire hallway was saturated with the foul smell of urine and feces, evidence of the neglect and poor living conditions that the dog had endured.
Further examination revealed the extent of Lenny’s suffering. The dog was emaciated, weighing only 12.7 kilograms—roughly half the weight of a healthy adult dog of his breed. He was dehydrated and covered in ulcers and wounds, particularly on his legs and chest, which indicated prolonged neglect and poor hygiene. The veterinarian’s X-ray scans showed that Lenny’s lower jawbone had disintegrated due to the large, untreated tumour, which had caused him immense pain and suffering. Due to the severity of his condition, the veterinarian made the difficult decision to euthanize Lenny on welfare grounds, ending his suffering.
During the court proceedings, Stokes admitted that he had not sought veterinary treatment for Lenny’s tumour and weight loss. He explained that he was aware of the severity of the dog’s condition and that he chose not to take him to a vet because he knew the dog would be euthanized. Stokes expressed that he could not bring himself to make that decision, which ultimately resulted in the dog enduring months of unnecessary pain and suffering.
Inspector Lasserre emphasized the importance of regular health checks and prompt veterinary care for pets. He stated, “This dreadful case shows the importance of checking your pet’s health regularly and seeking veterinary treatment the moment you think something is wrong. There is no doubt that Lenny could have been spared months of suffering if he’d been taken to a vet. It is never an easy decision to make to have your pet put to sleep when the time comes but, to allow suffering to continue for selfish reasons, is inexcusable.”
As a consequence of his actions, Victor Stokes was sentenced to ten weeks in jail. Additionally, he received a lifelong ban from keeping animals, a measure aimed at preventing any future neglect or cruelty. The case serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities pet owners have and the devastating consequences of neglecting those duties.
