JOHNNY KIJIP SENTENCED FOR BRUTAL SHAKING OF 10-MONTH-OLD IN WISBECH

A man identified as Johnny Kijip has been handed a 20-month prison sentence after causing severe injuries to his 10-month-old son through violent shaking. The incident took place in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, and was reported on May 30, 2019, when emergency services were called to the child's residence around 15:40 BST. Paramedics responded to reports that the infant was not breathing properly, prompting immediate medical intervention.

At the time of the incident, Johnny Kijip had been responsible for caring for his young son for just over an hour. During this brief period, he inflicted injuries that would have devastating consequences. The medical examinations conducted on the baby revealed a bleed on the brain, bleeding behind the eyes, and bruises of various ages scattered across his small body. These injuries indicated a pattern of trauma that was inconsistent with accidental causes.

Fortunately, the child's life was saved thanks to the quick actions of a neighbor who administered CPR, stabilizing the infant until professional medical help arrived. The police investigation uncovered that Kijip claimed the bruises were caused by the child attempting to walk and bumping into objects, as well as falling from a small chair. He suggested that these incidents led the baby to cry himself unconscious. However, medical experts strongly disagreed with these explanations, asserting that the injuries were consistent with shaking rather than accidental falls or bumps.

During the court proceedings at Cambridge Crown Court, Judge Peter Rook KC determined that the injuries were non-accidental and most likely caused by violent shaking, which resulted in the bleed on the brain. The judge emphasized the severity of the harm inflicted and the betrayal of trust involved in the case. A police officer described the incident as both shocking and upsetting, highlighting the importance of intervention by authorities to protect vulnerable children from harm.
