TREVER WELLS FROM ROTHERHAM ATTEMPTS SUICIDE IN PRISON AFTER SEX OFFENSES
In November 2006, Trevor Wells, a man from Denaby Main near Rotherham, found himself at the center of a disturbing incident within the confines of HMP Preston. Wells, who had been convicted of serious sexual offenses involving children, made a desperate attempt to end his life by hanging himself just weeks after he was sentenced to an eight-year prison term for rape and indecent assault.Wells, aged 56 and residing on Wadworth Street, was initially sentenced in September for his heinous crimes against young boys. The court heard that his offenses included rape and indecent assault committed against minors, which led to his incarceration. However, the legal proceedings did not end there. Wells was brought back to Preston Crown Court to face additional charges, including two counts of indecent assault and two counts of indecency involving two young boys aged six and seven.
During the hearing, Andrew O’Byrne, representing Wells, disclosed that the inmate had attempted to take his own life while in custody. O’Byrne stated, “He tried to hang himself, no doubt in remorse, anguish and deep despair. Perhaps this was an indication about how he felt about what it was he had done.” The judge presiding over the case, Judge Stuart Baker, addressed the court and emphasized the severity of Wells’ crimes. He pointed out that the offenses against the young boys involved aggravating circumstances, notably threats made by Wells to silence his victims if they disclosed what had happened.
Initially, Wells was scheduled for a trial on these additional charges. However, he chose to plead guilty, thereby avoiding a lengthy court process. The case highlights the disturbing nature of Wells’ crimes and the profound impact they have had on the victims and the community in Rotherham. His suicide attempt in prison underscores the psychological toll such offenses can take on offenders, especially those who are incarcerated for crimes against children.
