TOMMY WOODWARD OF PICKERING INVOLVED IN HUNT SABOTAGE AND CONTROVERSIAL REMARKS

Tommy Woodward, a builder and former Liberal Democrat Councillor from Pickering, Yorkshire, has been linked to multiple incidents involving hunt sabotage activities. His actions have drawn significant attention and condemnation from various quarters.

Over the years, Woodward has been observed trespassing on private hunting grounds and engaging in aggressive behavior towards members of the hunting community. Notably, in March 2018, during an incident at Scrayingham, he was captured on camera carrying a red spray bottle, which is often associated with sabotage efforts aimed at disrupting hunts. During this event, he was also seen wearing a body camera, possibly to record his activities or interactions. These actions highlight his active involvement in efforts to interfere with lawful hunting activities, which are often controversial and polarizing within local communities.

Beyond his direct actions at hunt sites, Woodward's controversial statements have also garnered widespread criticism. In 2014, he caused a stir after posting a provocative comment on the Facebook page of the Hunt Saboteurs Association. This comment followed the tragic death of Mr. Ellis, an ex-soldier and Scots Guardsman from Lancashire, who had taken his own life amid financial difficulties. Woodward wrote, “Best use of a gun I can think of,” which many interpreted as a callous remark. He further added, “We would all rather live in a world where no one kills for fun. However, if you choose to own a gun and kill for pleasure, then it’s best you kill yourself,” a statement that was widely condemned for its insensitivity and cruelty.

Despite the public outrage and calls for his resignation, Woodward refused to step down from his position on the local council. Official documents from the council confirmed that he was still serving as a councillor in 2017, and reports from April 2018 indicated that efforts were underway to find a replacement for him. His continued presence in public office despite such controversial remarks raised questions about accountability and the standards expected of public officials.

Richard Ali, the Chief Executive of the British Association for Shooting and Conservation, publicly condemned Woodward’s remarks, stating, “Mocking the suicide of anyone is absolutely unacceptable and stating that lawful gun owners should ‘kill themselves’ is despicable behaviour. This man is not fit to hold a public office... We know from past actions that animal rights extremists will stop at nothing in their hatred of anyone involved in lawful shooting activities.”
