FACE OF EVIL - MONSTER JAILED FOR LIFE FOR HEINOUS CRIMES
Timothy Bates, aged 53, must serve a minimum of 20 years for offences carried out against a child in South Devon. He was convicted at Exeter Crown Court at a trial in July of four charges of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity.
The judge paid tribute to the courage of the victim, describing her as "the most impressive witness he had ever seen." Bates, of Liskerrett Road, Liskeard, denied the offences, claiming he was wrongly accused.
He returned to court for sentencing on October 7, where the judge imposed the maximum sentence, citing that Bates continues to pose a significant risk to the public and could be subject to lifelong licence if released after 20 years.
The victim expressed that her crimes had left her traumatized, but she now feels stronger and believes justice will help her healing process.
Officer Detective Constable Catherine Bell stated, "Timothy Bates’ actions have had a profound effect on the life of the victim in this case.
He has never had the courage to admit the suffering he caused, and her bravery in giving evidence was notable.
We welcome this sentence, which removes a dangerous sex offender from the streets.
We encourage anyone who has suffered sexual abuse to report it, regardless of when it happened." Support services are available for those affected.
