THOMAS SWEENEY FROM SOUTH SHIELDS SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON UNDERAGE GIRL
In a case that has shocked the community of South Shields, Thomas Sweeney, a 26-year-old resident of Prince Edward Road, was found guilty of serious criminal offenses involving an underage girl.The incident, which took place in early 2020, led to Sweeney being charged with grooming the young victim and subsequently sexually assaulting her.
Thomas Sweeney appeared before Newcastle Crown Court to face the charges.
During the proceedings on Monday, January 13, he entered a guilty plea to one count of sexual assault as well as meeting a child following sexual grooming.
The court heard how Sweeney had engaged in inappropriate communication and behavior with the underage girl, ultimately culminating in a sexual assault.
Following the guilty plea, the judge delivered a sentence on Monday, March 16, which resulted in Sweeney being sentenced to 19 months in prison.
