THOMAS MELLING OF HASLEMERE ESCAPES JAIL AFTER DISCOVERY OF CHILD ABUSE IMAGES
In August 2017, a disturbing case unfolded involving Thomas Melling, a 67-year-old former headteacher from Haslemere, Surrey, who was found in possession of an alarming collection of child abuse images.Despite the severity of the evidence against him, Melling was spared immediate imprisonment during his court hearing, receiving a community order instead.
Thomas Melling, who was previously convicted in 1999 for sexually touching a pupil—an incident involving a kiss—faced new charges related to the possession of hundreds of illicit images.
The court was informed that police discovered a total of 912 Category A images, which are classified as the most severe, along with 622 Category B images, 1,268 Category C images, and two extreme pornographic images involving a dog and a horse.
These images were found on devices seized from his home earlier that year.
Further investigation revealed that police had also recovered 12 cartoon indecent images of children stored on two hard drives and a computer.
The devices, along with two Samsung Galaxy smartphones, were seized during a police raid on April 27, after authorities were alerted by peer-to-peer file-sharing software companies.
During the search, officers also uncovered WhatsApp messages on the phones indicating that Melling had shown interest in a nine-year-old child from a family in Kenya, a country he was sponsoring.
Prosecutor Tim Devlin detailed the findings to the court, emphasizing the disturbing nature of the evidence.
Melling, who still received financial support from his wife, a teacher, was arrested at his residence on Woolmer Hill Road, Haslemere.
He was initially released on police bail after being cautioned, but the evidence collected led to formal charges.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Peter Moss acknowledged the gravity of the offences.
Melling pleaded guilty to five counts related to indecent images of children.
The judge outlined the quantities of images found: 912 in the most severe Category A, 622 in Category B, and 1,268 in Category C.
Additional charges included possession of two extreme pornographic images and 12 prohibited images, which were identified as cartoons.
Judge Moss expressed his concern over Melling’s apparent interest in sexual abuse and indecent images, noting that this was not his first encounter with the criminal justice system.
The judge remarked on the difficulty for most people to comprehend why someone would seek out or store such material, emphasizing that Melling’s possession of these images contributed to the ongoing production of similar content by others.
As part of his sentence, Melling was handed a three-year community order and was required to undertake a 100-day treatment program.
He was also ordered to pay costs of £480.
Additionally, he received a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which restricts his internet use and bans him from traveling to Kenya.
Melling was also mandated to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for ten years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
