SUPPORT WORKER STRUCK OFF FOR CHILD ABUSE IN SCOTLAND
A support worker named Thomas McLachlan was found guilty in Scotland of abusing a young person with disabilities. The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) disclosed that McLachlan exhibited abusive conduct over a period of several months, which included twisting the child's arm, grabbing and tossing them onto a bed, administering medication beyond prescribed limits, and obstructing communication by covering the wheelchair horn to hinder the child's ability to signal care needs.
These incidents occurred between April and September 2021 during his employment with Capability Scotland.
In November 2023, the court convicted him of deliberate neglect and mistreatment of the child.
Following this, the SSSC determined that his professional fitness was compromised, and this week, they issued a removal order, prohibiting him from practicing within the social care sector.
The regulator highlighted that McLachlan's misconduct was serious, ongoing, and involved a pattern of targeting the young person, which raised serious concerns about his suitability to care for vulnerable individuals.
They also questioned his underlying values.
An investigation revealed that he demonstrated limited awareness of his actions and showed little to no effort towards reflection or improvement, leading to the decision to remove him from the registration in order to preserve the integrity and trustworthiness of the social care profession.
