THOMAS MCKAY/THOMAS HUGHES SHOCKING SEX OFFENDER FROM DUNDEE FACES JUSTICE IN GLASGOW
A man accused of heinous sexual offenses in Dundee has been remanded into custody as he awaits sentencing. Thomas Hughes, aged 35, was involved in a disturbing incident where he indecently assaulted a woman while she was asleep at a residence in Dundee. The assault escalated to rape, leading to his arrest and subsequent court proceedings.According to reports, when police officers arrived to detain Hughes, he made a startling statement without being prompted or cautioned. One officer recounted that Hughes said, “She was out of it. I had sex with her then I put her trousers back on.” Another officer documented his remarks, stating, “She was absolutely wasted. She had been taking cannabis the night before. I had sex with her, pulled her trousers back up and put her back to bed.”
Hughes, who provided an address at a house on Helmsdale Avenue in Dundee, denied the allegations of sexual assault and rape during a trial held at the High Court in Edinburgh. The victim was asleep and unable to give or withhold consent at the time of the incident, which occurred on June 23 of the previous year. Despite his denials, Hughes was found guilty of the crimes.
The court heard that Hughes had maintained contact with the victim through social media and phone calls following the assault. At one point, he reportedly told her, “I have explained that what I did was wrong.” He also claimed that he had encouraged her to report the incident to the police, stating, “On a number of occasions I was telling her to go to the police but she still continues to barrage me with calls and text messages.”
During the proceedings, Hughes told advocate depute Ashley Edwards that his intention was for the woman to go to the authorities. However, the court was informed of his continued attempts to communicate with her after the incident.
Lord Summers, presiding over the case, ordered Hughes to be remanded in custody and placed on the sex offenders register. The judge also called for a comprehensive background report to be prepared on Hughes ahead of the sentencing hearing scheduled at the High Court in Glasgow on November 15, as the legal process moves forward to address this serious crime.
