THOMAS DODSLEY AND SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN DERBYSHIRE
A former University of Derby lecturer, Thomas Dodsley, has been convicted of possessing and creating obscene images of children, as well as maintaining disgusting files containing abuse material. The revelation of his depraved acts has sent shockwaves through the local community in Derbyshire, where he was employed and resided.
Dodsley, a 34-year-old man who was married at the time of his offences, had engaged in a disturbing pattern of behaviour over a span of six years.
His criminal activities included not only collecting nearly 3,000 indecent images depicting child abuse, some involving infants being raped, but also manipulating photographs of students and staff from social media platforms connected to the University of Derby.
These images were gruesomely altered; Dodsley superimposed images of genitalia onto photographs of individuals, accompanied by inappropriate captions and text boxes.
One of the most heinous examples included the phrase, “look into my eyes, Mr Dodsley,” inscribed over a lewd image, illustrating his disturbing fixation.
The police action against Dodsley culminated on September 1 of the previous year when they executed a search warrant at his residence on Grosvenor Avenue, Breaston.
Upon arrival at approximately 6:50 am, his wife answered the door before Dodsley himself appeared a short while later.
Authorities confiscated his laptops and other electronic devices, which subsequently underwent detailed analysis.
The digital forensic examination revealed a trove of illegal material—62 images classified as Category A, which is the most severe, 70 images in Category B, along with 2,842 images categorized as Level C, in addition to five prohibited images and 16 extreme pornographic videos.
Investigators also discovered that a USB stick contained explicit photographs of current and former Derby University students and staff members.
These images had reportedly been obtained from social media accounts.
Many of them displayed individuals' genitalia, with some bearing superimposed text one notably reading, “look into my eyes, Mr Dodsley” highlighting his sinister obsession.
Alongside these, police uncovered numerous videos and images that featured animals in sexual acts, as well as footage involving humans engaged in sexual activities with animals.
Thomas Dodsley pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including three counts of making indecent images of children, along with the possession of prohibited and extreme pornography.
The offences spanned from March 24, 2014, through to September 1, 2020.
In court, his legal representative, Sean Smith, acknowledged that Dodsley was actively attempting to address his problematic behaviour through participation in an accredited behavioural therapy program.
During the sentencing at Derby Crown Court, Judge Shaun Smith QC addressed Dodsley’s background, noting that at the time of his arrest, he was employed as a criminology lecturer at the University of Derby a position he had held for three years.
Previously, he was involved in youth work, which added a layer of outrage to his criminal conduct.
The judge commented on the mitigating factors present but emphasised that the pre-sentence report suggested Dodsley might have continued his offending had he not been caught.
A statement from the University of Derby expressed that the institution was unaware of any allegations or concerns regarding Dodsley until his court appearance.
The university confirmed that he had ceased employment in March of the same year.
In addition to his jail sentence of one year, Judge Smith ordered Dodsley to be registered as a sex offender for ten years, during which he must adhere to strict restrictions designed to prevent future offenses.
Furthermore, he was subjected to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order, which included a ban on working with children for the same duration, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the potential risk to vulnerable individuals.
