THOMAS DALTON
Thomas Dalton arrived at the woman's residence and verbally assaulted her, wrongly suspecting her of infidelity.
According to the evidence presented at Newcastle Crown Court, Dalton instructed her to leave the house and enter his car, during which he inflicted the injury in July.
Prosecutor Kevin Wardlaw explained that the incident was captured on CCTV footage and stated to the court: "He demands she get into his car, pushes her toward it, and when she is seated with her legs out of the vehicle, he forcefully shuts the door on her legs, resulting in a broken knee." Dalton, 46, of Highfield Road, South Shields, who has prior convictions for violence and was previously sentenced to indefinite detention for public protection in 2006, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm.
Recorder Tom Moran sentenced him to 15 months imprisonment but noted that the parole board would determine his release, as he has been recalled to serve the remainder of his indefinite sentence.
Defence lawyer David Callan stated that Dalton has expressed "considerable remorse" and mentioned that the indefinite sentence has significantly affected his mental health.
He added: "Every time he's released, he feels anxious, knowing that any misstep could land him back in prison, and he has been recalled multiple times." Mr.
Callan highlighted that Dalton recognizes the victim as a "loyal and honest" person and emphasized: "She wouldn't lie, but at the time, he didn't trust what she said."
