2018: OLDBURY MAN JAILED FOR ATTACKING PREGNANT PARTNER OVER TEXT MESSAGES
A man from Oldbury who repeatedly assaulted his pregnant partner after becoming enraged over text messages on her phone has received a one-year prison sentence.Judge Dean Kershaw remarked that Thomas Cleveland, aged 36, clearly demonstrated bullying behavior and was driven by jealousy in his actions.
During proceedings at Wolverhampton Crown Court, it was revealed that Cleveland was serving a suspended sentence at the time of the incidents, which had been previously handed down for violence against the same woman.
According to prosecutor Gerald Bermingham, Cleveland's first attack occurred after he confronted his partner about her texts, leading him to slap her face, causing her glasses to break, and then punch her in the head and body.
Less than three weeks later, Cleveland assaulted her again by grabbing her face and striking her over the head with a plastic bottle filled with frozen water.
Mr.
Bermingham noted that both assaults took place while Cleveland was still under the terms of his suspended sentence, which was originally imposed due to earlier violence against the same partner.
Cleveland, who resides on Eva Road, pleaded guilty to both assaults and the violation of the court order.
The judge concluded that only immediate custody would be suitable for these offenses.
He was sentenced to five months for the assaults and an additional seven months for the breach, and was also prohibited from contacting the woman for two years.
Naomi Nelson-Cofie, representing the defendant, told the court that Cleveland’s only criminal record involved violence toward his partner and that she had expressed a desire to continue their relationship.
