TERRY THURLOW FROM TILBURY ESCAPES JAIL AFTER CHILD PORNOGRAPHY DISCOVERY
In a case that has shocked the community of Tilbury, Essex, Terry Thurlow, aged 31, was found to have been involved in the possession and distribution of indecent images of children, yet he narrowly avoided imprisonment. The incident came to light after a package addressed to Thurlow was intercepted at a local sorting office, raising suspicions that led to police intervention.According to reports, the package contained a catalogue featuring explicit images of naked children along with a DVD showcasing indecent photographs of minors. This discovery prompted Essex Police to conduct a thorough investigation, culminating in a raid on Thurlow’s residence located at Brisbane House on Leicester Road in Tilbury. The operation took place on January 20 of the previous year.
During the raid, Thurlow cooperated with officers by handing over additional material, including another catalogue, a DVD, and a photograph of a child that he retrieved from his pocket. Authorities seized his computer equipment for forensic analysis. When examined, the computer revealed an alarming total of 94 images of child pornography, further implicating Thurlow in the possession of illegal material.
At Basildon Crown Court, Judge Michael Brooke QC addressed the case, ultimately sentencing Thurlow to a three-year community order. The judge emphasized that Thurlow would be required to participate in the Thames Valley Sex Offenders Treatment Programme as part of his rehabilitation. In his remarks, Judge Brooke explained that a custodial sentence was considered but ultimately not imposed, citing Thurlow’s previous good character and the current state of the prison system, which would have likely resulted in a suspended sentence.
Judge Brooke acknowledged that most of the images had been deleted from Thurlow’s devices, but evidence indicated that some images had been viewed multiple times. The judge dismissed any claims that the images were accessed accidentally, stating, “any suggestion of accident is not acceptable.”
It was also revealed that Thurlow had been suffering from severe depression, which was linked to a traumatic incident five years prior when he witnessed a friend being stabbed to death with a Samurai sword in a pub. The court noted that Thurlow was receiving mental health support to address these psychiatric issues.
Thurlow, who had previously pleaded guilty to 16 counts of making and possessing indecent images of children, was also ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for a period of five years. Additionally, the court mandated the forfeiture and destruction of his computer hard drive and all related materials seized during the investigation, aiming to prevent any further distribution or access to such illegal content.
