In August 2021, the community and authorities in North Shields were reminded of the dangers lurking online and the importance of vigilance when it comes to protecting vulnerable children. The case involved Terry Hopper, a 37-year-old man from Sibthorpe Street in North Shields, who was convicted of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of minors. His actions, which spanned over a period of time, culminated in a lengthy prison sentence after he was found guilty of multiple serious offenses.

Hopper’s criminal activities came to light after two brave young victims came forward to authorities, revealing the extent of his manipulative and predatory behavior. The police praised these victims for their courage in helping to bring Hopper to justice, describing their efforts as instrumental in ensuring that a “sickening and depraved” individual was held accountable for his actions.

The first victim, a 13-year-old girl, was targeted by Hopper through social media. In his late 20s at the time, Hopper created a fictitious online persona under the alias ‘Matt Hunt’ and began messaging her. He falsely claimed to be a 15-year-old boy, even going as far as sending her a photograph of a sandy-haired teenager to reinforce his false identity. Over time, Hopper manipulated the girl into sending him nude photographs, gradually gaining her trust by professing love and affection.

Eventually, Hopper convinced her to meet in person. When she arrived at the designated location, she was horrified to realize that her online ‘friend’ was actually an older man. Confronted with the truth, she decided to leave, but Hopper responded with threats, warning her that he would expose her private photos if she did not comply with his demands. Under duress, he took her to a dingy flat where he committed a sexual assault against her. He further blackmailed her into silence, threatening to reveal her images if she disclosed what had happened.

During the same period, Hopper was also in contact with a second girl, aged between 12 and 13. Using the same fake identity, he claimed to be 17 years old and began stalking her as she walked to school. He monitored her daily routine, even commenting on her clothing during her morning walks. Like the first victim, she was pressured into sending nude photographs, hoping that compliance would make Hopper leave her alone. Her fears and the manipulation tactics used by Hopper exemplify the predatory nature of his crimes.

Years later, both victims found the strength to come forward and report Hopper’s misconduct. His arrest followed in March 2020, and by May 2021, he had pleaded guilty at Newcastle Crown Court to charges of rape and attempting to engage in sexual communication with a minor. The court proceedings included victim impact statements, which detailed how Hopper’s actions had stolen their childhoods and caused lasting trauma.

On the day of sentencing, the judge emphasized the severity of Hopper’s crimes, condemning his actions as a gross violation of trust and innocence. Hopper was sentenced to nine years in prison, with the possibility of serving up to two-thirds of that term behind bars. Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender, subject to a sexual harm prevention order, and a restraining order was issued to protect both victims from further contact.
