TERRENCE JOHN'S BRUTAL ATTACK IN BARRY LEAVES VICTIM FIGHTING FOR LIFE
A shocking and violent assault unfolded in Barry when a pensioner, Terrence John, launched a brutal attempt to murder his former partner while she was peacefully sleeping in her home. The incident, which took place in the early hours of June 12, has left the community shaken and highlights the severity of domestic violence cases.According to court proceedings, the victim, a woman residing in Barry, was subjected to a terrifying attack at approximately 5 am. Armed with a kitchen knife, John entered her bedroom uninvited and, without warning, began his assault. The woman awoke to find John standing over her, and he immediately threatened to stab her. Despite her fear and injuries, she managed to defend herself using a fan, which she used to fight him off. Her quick thinking allowed her to escape the flat, only wearing a towel, and she fled to a neighboring flat seeking safety.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene. When police and paramedics arrived, they discovered John lying face down in a pool of blood, having attempted to take his own life. He sustained multiple wounds to his neck, chest, abdomen, and wrists. During questioning, John admitted to the police that he had intended to kill his former partner, although he claimed he did not mean to do so, explaining that he had 'lost the plot.'
The victim sustained serious injuries, including a stab wound below her eye and another to her breast, which required stitches. The physical injuries were severe, but the psychological scars have been equally devastating. She described experiencing flashbacks and struggling with sleep, indicating the profound emotional impact of the attack.
Further details revealed that prior to the incident, John had sent a text message to his daughter indicating he was trying very hard not to kill his partner. His daughter initially thought the message was a joke, unaware of the seriousness of his intentions. The court heard that John, who resides at Powis View in Barry, pleaded guilty to attempted murder. His sentencing resulted in a 12-year extended sentence—comprising nine years in custody and an additional three years on extended licence.
The presiding judge emphasized the unprovoked nature of the attack and expressed concern that John still did not fully grasp the gravity of his actions. The case underscores the ongoing dangers of domestic violence and the importance of intervention and support for victims in similar situations.
