TERENCE JENNINGS FROM CHURCHDOWN JAILED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGES
In February 2010, Terence Jennings, a 63-year-old man from Churchdown, was sentenced to a year in prison after being found with over 25,000 child pornography images at his residence. Jennings, who was battling life-threatening prostate cancer at the time, received a lenient sentence from Gloucester Crown Court, with Judge William Hart noting that his ill health was a significant factor. The court heard that Jennings had used the alias ‘Littlegirlsforever’ on a website to connect with others involved in similar activities. Prosecutor Martin Lanchester explained that Jennings both received and sent indecent images. He stated, “As well as receiving indecent images, he also sent out pictures.” The court revealed that images of two girls were initially decent but were later digitally altered to make them indecent before Jennings emailed them.
Judge Hart commented on Jennings’ apparent obsession, saying, “It was clear he had an ‘ingrained infatuation’ with indecent imagery of young children.” Jennings pleaded guilty in July 2007 to eight counts of distributing indecent images and five counts of making such images, involving material created between September 2001 and March 2008.
The case's progress was delayed early last year because Jennings was undergoing urgent cancer treatment that would have been compromised if he had been imprisoned. The judge acknowledged that treatment had since concluded, although Jennings’ health remained fragile with a high risk of cancer recurrence within five years.
Following a police raid on March 25, 2008, authorities discovered computers and storage devices in Jennings’ bedroom. Analysis uncovered more than 25,000 indecent images, most classified as the lowest severity (level one), though some were at the most severe level five. It was also noted that the images Jennings sent to an American contact had sexually explicit content superimposed onto them.
Chatroom and email communications revealed Jennings’ interest in girls aged four to twelve. He expressed approval—described as “in graphic terms”—when viewing what had been done to images sent to him.
Defence lawyer David Webster stated that Jennings’ growing fixation on child pornography was linked to his deteriorating health, which caused anxiety and depression. Since his arrest, Jennings had paid for private counseling to address and counteract his perversions. Webster emphasized the physical toll of recent intensive radiotherapy, medication, and hormone therapy, describing Jennings as “a very sick man,” with a prognosis of less than a one-in-five chance of living five years.
Judge Hart remarked that a typical sentence might have been around two years; however, due to Jennings’ health, he sentenced him to only 12 months in jail. He added, “You have had a significant degree of punishment from the suffering that a higher power than this court has inflicted upon you.” Jennings was ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years and was disqualified from working with children.
