CHEF JAILED FOR VIOLENT DOMESTIC ABUSE AND GRIEVOUS BODILY HARM
A 29-year-old chef convicted of domestic violence has been sentenced to over five years behind bars.Tavian Sutton moved into his girlfriend’s residence in Bingley earlier this year, but shortly after, the couple’s frequent disagreements turned violent.
The Bradford Crown Court was told that Sutton assaulted his partner within weeks of moving in.
Prosecutor Syam Soni stated that Sutton initially apologized following the initial assault, but a month later, he threatened to “smash her face in” and “boot her in the face” during a further argument.
The victim described being forcefully kicked, causing heavy bleeding from her nose and lips.
Evidence included a 999 call featuring audible screams and shouts from Sutton, as well as a neighbor who heard the attack.
When police arrived, she was transported to hospital; despite Sutton being released under investigation, their relationship continued.
In April, Sutton became “in a rage,” assaulting her repeatedly, including standing over her and stamping on her head.
He also threatened to kill her with a knife and self-harm.
The woman recounted feeling terrified during this incident, describing it as a “blur.” She managed to call emergency services while Sutton was sleeping, and medical scans later found brain bleeding and a broken nose.
During sentencing, she read a personal statement expressing her fears for her future and the trauma she endured, including difficulties in returning to work, dependence on medication, and loss of trust.
Sutton, who had previously worked as a chef after spending his teenage years in care, appeared via video from HMP Leeds, where he had been remanded following his arrest.
He pleaded guilty to charges of wounding with intent, assault, and making threats to kill.
He received a sentence of five and a half years and was subject to an indefinite restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim or approaching her within 100 meters.
His solicitor described their relationship as “toxic,” asserting it should have ended after the first assault.
Judge Nadim condemned Sutton’s conduct as “most violent, shameful and disgraceful,” stressing that the victim deserved respect and protection.
The judge also noted that Sutton’s actions had damaged her life and compromised his own future opportunities.
