TARRA STEWART FROM LARNE SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO DOGS BELLA AND LILO

Tarra Stewart, born on August 19, 1993, and previously residing at Gardenmore Place in Larne, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to two crossbreed dogs named Bella and Lilo. The case was brought to court following a thorough investigation initiated by the Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, which took action after receiving a tip-off about the conditions at Stewart's residence.

In July 2023, an animal welfare officer from the council visited Stewart's property in Larne after the tip was received. Upon inspection, the officer discovered the two dogs in a deplorable state, living in a garden that was heavily contaminated with faeces and other unsanitary conditions. The dogs were visibly underweight, and their physical condition was alarming. Stewart voluntarily surrendered Bella and Lilo to the authorities, and both animals were immediately taken to a veterinary clinic for a comprehensive examination.

The veterinarian's report detailed the severity of the dogs' suffering. Bella was described as emaciated, with her ribs, spine, and the long bones of her legs clearly protruding through her skin. Despite her frail condition, Bella exhibited a ravenous appetite, indicating prolonged malnutrition. Lilo was also found to be extremely thin and similarly ravenous, suggesting a lack of proper nourishment for an extended period. The vet noted that there was no dog food available at Stewart's property, and the garden was in a state of extreme filth, covered in faeces. Both dogs were officially certified as suffering due to neglect and poor living conditions.

Following the investigation, Bella and Lilo were successfully rehomed into caring and suitable environments, ensuring their future well-being. Stewart faced legal consequences for her actions, and during the court proceedings, she pleaded guilty to the charges of animal cruelty.

In sentencing, Stewart was ordered to complete 150 hours of community service and pay £181 in court costs. Additionally, she received a five-year disqualification order from owning or caring for animals, which will remain in effect until November 2029. This case highlights the ongoing efforts by local authorities in Larne and the wider Mid and East Antrim area to combat animal cruelty and promote responsible pet ownership.
