TANYA SANDERSON FROM KNOWLE CONVICTED OF ANIMAL CRUELTY IN BRISTOL
Tanya Sanderson, a resident of Knowle, has been found guilty of severe animal cruelty charges following a prolonged period of neglect towards her pet dog, Yogi, an eight-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The case drew significant attention after investigations revealed the extent of the suffering endured by the dog, which ultimately led to his euthanasia.Yogi was discovered in a dire state, suffering from a persistent, non-healing wound and a large mass lesion that had caused extensive tissue destruction in his mouth and nasal area. These injuries left him unable to eat or drink properly, resulting in a gradual decline in his health and weight. The neglect was so severe that Yogi appeared emaciated, with ribs, hips, spine, and skull prominently visible, and a noticeable hole in his nose. The situation prompted authorities to intervene after reports from concerned members of the community.
Sanderson was summoned to court on a warrant after she failed to attend an earlier hearing. Following an investigation led by the RSPCA, she ultimately admitted to the charges of animal cruelty. The case gained further momentum in September 2024 when RSPCA Deputy Chief Inspector Simon Coombs visited her home in Knowle. During the visit, he observed Yogi in a critically poor condition, confirming the reports of neglect. Sanderson acknowledged that Yogi had been in this state for several weeks and that he was very unwell. Recognizing the severity of the dog's condition, Yogi was taken to a veterinary clinic, where he was euthanized due to the extent of his suffering.
The post-mortem examination of Yogi revealed extensive damage affecting his upper jaw and extending into his nasal cavity. The autopsy showed destruction of bone and tissue, an open wound connecting his nose to his upper jaw, and visible roots of teeth, indicating a long period of suffering. Veterinary reports indicated that Yogi had been enduring this pain and neglect for more than three to six months. The findings confirmed that Sanderson had failed to meet his basic needs, including freedom from hunger, thirst, pain, injury, or disease, which constitutes a clear case of neglect and improper care.
During court proceedings, Sanderson attempted to mitigate her actions by claiming she was struggling with addiction and housing issues. Despite her explanations, the court emphasized the importance of animal welfare and the responsibility of pet owners to provide proper care. Inspector Coombs took the opportunity to remind pet owners of the importance of seeking help if they are facing difficulties, underscoring that animals deserve kindness and compassion at all times. No animal should be subjected to such neglect and suffering.
As a result of her actions, Sanderson was sentenced to a 21-week custodial sentence, which was suspended for 18 months. Additionally, she was ordered to complete 30 days of rehabilitation. The court also imposed a 15-year ban on owning animals, a restriction that she can appeal after 10 years. This ban is set to expire in April 2040, ensuring that she will be prohibited from owning pets for a significant period in the future.
