HEDNESFORD COUPLE HANDED SUSPENDED PRISON FOR PUPPY FARM CRUELTY

Ian and Susan Wilson, of Mount Street in Hednesford, were handed suspended prison sentences after being found guilty of operating an illegal puppy farm.

The couple kept approximately 60 dogs, including chihuahuas and German shepherds, at their property which was raided in October 2019 by Staffordshire Police, Cannock Chase District Council, and the Dogs Trust.

All dogs were seized during this operation.

A search of their home revealed they possessed incubators and unlicensed hormone drugs used to increase the breeding output of the dogs.

The Wilsons pleaded guilty to fraudulent trading and were sentenced to 22 months in prison, suspended for 18 months, with a three-month curfew.

They were also banned from breeding, rehoming, or selling dogs, although they could keep any pets they owned.

Despite previous warnings about breeding without a license, they continued their illegal activities.

An investigation uncovered that they had posted adverts for 425 dogs between 2017 and 2019, engaging in fraudulent online practices using false identities to evade detection.

The court heard about a German shepherd obtained from Wales, where the dog was found living in terrible conditions, lying in faeces and urine, with nails that indicated she had never left her enclosure in eight months and was used solely for breeding.

The Wilsons had also sold puppies infected with parvovirus, some of which died.

The judge highlighted their lack of remorse and said their actions were motivated solely by greed.

Following sentencing, a council spokesperson condemned their conduct as the worst case of animal neglect encountered by local authorities and expressed relief that all the dogs had eventually found caring homes, with the Dogs Trust rehoming all animals by November 2019.

The case drew significant public attention, with many calls for rehoming and awareness about animal cruelty.
