SURAJIT DAS FROM SUTTON COLDFIELD JAILED FOR SEXUAL GROOMING OF 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL

In April 2011, a disturbing case unfolded involving Surajit Das, a 55-year-old man from Walmley, Sutton Coldfield, who was convicted of grooming a young girl for sexual activity. The case drew significant attention due to the serious nature of the charges and the community's concern over the safety of children in the area.

Das faced a total of seven charges related to sexual activity with a minor, along with a more grave allegation of inciting a child under the age of 13 to engage in sexual acts. Despite his vehement denial of these accusations, a jury at Birmingham Crown Court found him guilty on all counts after a thorough trial. The court proceedings revealed the extent of the grooming behavior, which had persisted over a period of two years, with the offender gradually escalating his inappropriate conduct.

During the sentencing hearing at Derby Crown Court, Judge Jonathan Gosling addressed the court and highlighted the context of Das's personal life. He acknowledged that Das's wife, Dr. Babi Rani Pal, who is a paediatrician, had stood by him throughout the legal process. The judge emphasized that Das was not considered a 'predator' in the traditional sense, noting his long-standing involvement with the Bengali Association, where he was well-regarded and had never previously attracted complaints. The judge stated, "You have been associated with the Bengali Association with children of all ages and both sexes for years, and it is clear you were valued in your role."

However, the judge made it clear that the grooming behavior was a serious breach of trust and morality. He described the behavior as 'repeated over a long period and escalating in intensity,' and explicitly told Das, "Obviously you were grooming this individual." The court sentenced Das to nine months in prison, considering this the most serious aspect of his crimes. No additional punishment was imposed for the other offences, which also involved inappropriate conduct over a two-year span.

In his remarks, Judge Gosling expressed regret that someone like Das, who had contributed positively to the community through his work running a market stall and later a shop in Sutton Coldfield town centre, could commit such acts. Das, who communicated through a Bengali-speaking interpreter, showed little emotion as he was led away to serve his sentence. The court ordered him to serve half of his prison term before being eligible for release. Furthermore, Das was mandated to register as a sex offender for ten years and was permanently barred from working with children.

During the proceedings, Das's wife, Dr. Babi Rani Pal, appeared as a defence witness but chose not to comment publicly after the sentencing. The investigation was led by Detective Inspector Jon Thursfield, who praised the bravery of the victim's family in coming forward. He emphasized the importance of reporting abuse and assured the public that police have specialized officers trained to support victims through the legal process. Detective Thursfield also encouraged other victims to come forward, assuring them of confidentiality and support throughout the investigation and court proceedings.
