YORKIE AD STAR WHO KILLED WIFE IS RELEASED
Stuart Mungall, aged 71 and best known for his roles in the original advertising campaign for Yorkie chocolate bars, has been released following court proceedings where he confessed to killing his terminally-ill wife, Joan, who was 69.The incident took place at their residence in Tooting, south London, last December.
The prosecution agreed to a manslaughter conviction, citing diminished responsibility due to Mungall's depression.
The court handed down a sentence of 12 months suspended for two years and ordered regular monitoring reports for potential mental health issues.
In court, Judge Peter Beaumont praised Mungall’s life as being 'trustworthy and distinguished,' highlighting his dedication to caring for his wife, who suffered from a degenerative brain condition that left her confined to bed and in pain.
While recognizing his compassion, the judge remarked, 'You cannot take the life of another with impunity.' It was also revealed that after smothering his wife with a pillow, Mungall ingested tablets to attempt ending his own life.
His legal representative expressed relief that the case was resolved, and the family has requested privacy as they grieve.
Joan Mungall was a former performer with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and they had been married for 43 years, having previously operated a garden centre in south London before her health declined.
