WIGAN MAN JAILED FOR WIFE'S 'AFFAIR REVENGE' MURDER
A man convicted of killing his wife during a jealous rage, just one day after he learned of an alleged affair, has been sentenced to life imprisonment.Stuart Gallear, aged 51, confessed to stabbing Mandy, his 42-year-old wife, to death at their residence in Hindley, Wigan, in October 2016, although he denied committing murder.
During his trial at Manchester Crown Court, Gallear claimed that he momentarily lost control, but the jury found him guilty of her murder.
The presiding judge, Mr.
Justice Openshaw, ordered that Gallear serve a minimum of 17 years behind bars.
He remarked that Gallear, originally from Wolverhampton, allowed himself to be overwhelmed by self-indulgence and feelings of self-pity as his family life disintegrated.
Mandy Gallear was discovered lying still on the kitchen floor with three severe chest wounds; despite efforts to save her, she died shortly afterward.
Half a year prior to her death, she had confided in others about an extramarital affair, claiming it had since ended.
Gallear told police he remembered having an amicable conversation with his wife following his return from drinking at a pub, during which she reportedly said, 'I love him more than you,' though he could not clearly recall the subsequent events.
Prosecutors argued that the murder resulted from mounting anger and resentment over the course of two days.
Mr.
Justice Openshaw explained that Gallear believed his wife planned to leave him, take their children, and sell the house, leaving him with nothing.
Although there was no evidence of premeditation, the judge emphasised that her belief she could find happiness elsewhere does not justify her murder, and he clarified that there was no significant provocation for the attack.
