STEWART BURGESS AND SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IN AYRSHIRE
Stewart Burgess, a man with a deeply troubling history of sexual offenses against minors, has once again been sentenced to prison following new revelations of his misconduct. Burgess, who had previously been convicted of abusing two teenage boys in 2008, is widely recognized by police as a 'prolific offender' whose predatory behavior spanned many years. The latest conviction stems from Burgess’s disturbing actions during the 1980s while he was employed as a senior house parent at the Redheugh Adolescent Unit in Kilbirnie, located within Ayrshire. This facility was operated by the Salvation Army and cared for vulnerable young individuals. Burgess had a position of significant trust, overseeing the welfare of teenagers in a supposedly protective environment, but instead, he exploited his authority to commit heinous acts.
Back in 2008, Burgess was found guilty of abusing two teenage boys under his care and received a sentence of ten years imprisonment. However, the gravity of his misconduct was further underscored when another victim from the same institution came forward, reviving investigations into Burgess’s past offenses. This new case led to additional court proceedings, during which a man now in his 50s recounted suffering at Burgess’s hands between 1984 and 1985.
During a trial held at the High Court in Paisley last month, evidence was presented that established Burgess’s continuous pattern of abuse, which mirrored his previous crimes. The victim described the trauma inflicted upon him, highlighting the lasting impact of Burgess’s actions. The court heard that Burgess, who hails from Cumnock, assaulted the young man in a manner similar to how he had mistreated other boys.
On April 21, Burgess was sentenced to three and a half years in prison by the High Court in Glasgow. Additionally, his name has been permanently added to the sex offenders register, ensuring that he remains under supervision and monitoring for the foreseeable future.
The investigation was led by Detective Inspector Gavin Chisholm of the Ayrshire Public Protection Unit. Inspector Chisholm stated, “Stewart Burgess is a prolific offender whose abuse of children spanned many years. He abused his position of trust and we welcome today’s sentencing.” He also emphasized the importance of the victim’s bravery: “I would like to recognise the bravery of the victim shown in reporting this and assisting us throughout the enquiry and court process which has been pivotal in securing this conviction.”
Chisholm reaffirmed Scotland Police’s unwavering commitment to tackling child abuse, adding, “Investigating abuse of children and young people remains one of Police Scotland’s top priorities. Please be assured that no matter when a crime is committed, we will listen and we will investigate.”
Furthermore, Fraser Gibson, Scotland’s Procurator Fiscal for High Court Sexual Offending, commented on the case, saying, “Stewart Burgess selfishly and callously abused young boys in his care. The victim in this case bravely came forward to report what happened to him as a child. His evidence of crimes which had not been dealt with previously allowed us to prosecute this offender again. I sincerely hope the victim finds some small comfort in holding Burgess accountable for his actions.”
Gibson also urged other victims to come forward, reassuring them that “time is no barrier” to seeking justice. He emphasized that victims should not hesitate to report abuse and seek support.
The Redheugh facility, where Burgess carried out his misconduct, is currently included in the ongoing Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry, which is chaired by Lady Smith. The institution was closed in 1994, but the investigation into abuses committed there continues, shedding light on a dark chapter in Scotland’s history of institutional care.
