STEVEN STALLEY'S SHOCKING LINWOOD RAPE CONVICTION IN GLASGOW COURT
A man named Steven Stalley, who is already serving a life sentence for multiple sex crimes, has been found guilty of raping a teenage girl in Linwood. The conviction comes after a detailed trial held at the High Court in Glasgow, where prosecutors presented compelling evidence against him. Stalley, aged 35, was accused of approaching the young victim shortly after they first met and exploiting her vulnerability. Despite his claims that any sexual contact was consensual and that the girl had agreed to the encounter, the jury did not accept his version of events. The incident in question occurred sometime between 2008 and 2010 at a location in Linwood. According to court records, the victim, who was approximately 14 years old at the time, ended up at a flat in Linwood with friends. It was there that Stalley was present. Witnesses described him as having an “unusual look in his eye,” which added to the concern surrounding his behavior. During the evening, Stalley offered the girl alcohol, which caused her to become intoxicated and fall asleep. She later awoke to find him engaging in sexual activity with her, an act that left her visibly upset and distressed.
Stalley's own account of the events was that he had engaged in a conversation with the girl for about 30 minutes and insisted that she had never said ‘no’ to him. However, the court rejected this explanation, emphasizing that the victim clearly stated she did not consent to the sexual act. The judge, Tom Hughes, sentenced Stalley to two years in prison for the rape, with the sentence to commence from the day of sentencing. The judge explained that this sentence was partly a recognition of the victim’s psychological suffering and was intended to allow the parole board to consider her mental health in future decisions.
It was also revealed during the trial that Stalley, who is known by the nickname 'Steg,' has a troubling history of sexual offending. He previously received a lifelong restriction order for similar crimes committed in Renfrewshire, indicating a pattern of predatory behavior. During the proceedings, Stalley appeared via video link from HMP Glenochil, where he was serving time. In his testimony, he maintained that he had been talking to the girl for about 30 minutes and again claimed she had never said ‘no.’ Prosecutor Ali Murray described him as a 'sexual predator,' highlighting the danger he posed.
Judge Hughes underscored the seriousness of the case by stating that the sentence was a life sentence, with the two-year term serving as a measure for future parole considerations. As he was led away in handcuffs, Stalley displayed some sarcasm, giving a thumbs-up and thanking the jury, a gesture that drew attention in the courtroom. The court also heard that the victim, who was around 14 at the time, had gone to a flat with a friend where Stalley was present. She was given alcohol by him and later woke up to find herself being assaulted. Her emotional distress was evident, and the court acknowledged the profound psychological impact this incident had on her.
Despite arguments from Stalley's legal team suggesting that he lacked intelligence, the court firmly believed the victim’s account and recognized the lasting trauma she endured. The case underscores the ongoing issues of sexual violence and the importance of justice for victims, especially minors, in the Linwood area and beyond.
