CORBY PAEDOPHILE STEVEN NEWLANDS JAILED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN CORBY AND WELLYINGBOROUGH

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Corby, Steven Newlands, a 29-year-old man with ties to the town, has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of possessing indecent images of children as young as four years old. The case highlights the serious breach of trust involved, especially given Newlands' previous employment as a teacher.

Newlands appeared before Northampton Crown Court on Friday, January 19, to face charges related to the possession of these illicit images. He pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images, which prompted a detailed investigation by the National Crime Agency (NCA). The investigation was initiated in November 2015 after authorities identified a chat room account named “scallylvr1,” which was used by Newlands. During the inquiry, it was revealed that Newlands, who had previously worked as a teacher in Liverpool, had asked the chat room if there were “any active peds [paedophiles],” indicating an interest in engaging with others involved in similar illicit activities.

Subsequently, law enforcement officials executed a search warrant at Newlands' residence in Corby, after he had moved to the town. During the search, officers seized a laptop and two mobile phones, which were later examined. The devices contained a total of 192 images classified into different categories based on their severity. Among these, 15 images were classified as Category A, representing the most vile and disturbing material, with others falling into Category B and Category C. Some of these images depicted children as young as four years old, underscoring the heinous nature of the material involved.

When questioned by authorities, Newlands initially denied possessing any such images. He claimed that his interest was not in the images themselves but in the paedophiles who created or shared such material. He stated, “I was interested in paedophiles themselves,” attempting to distance himself from the explicit content. Despite his denial, the evidence found on his devices proved otherwise.

It was also revealed that Newlands had left his teaching position in Liverpool approximately six months prior to his arrest and had secured employment at a school in Wellingborough. However, it was clarified that he was not working at the school at the time he downloaded the images. The court heard that Newlands actively searched for such material through various mediums, with prosecutor Abigail Hill stating, “The defendant was actively searching a variety of mediums for the material. He expressed interest in children as young as 0+.”

Her Honour Judge Lucking, presiding over the case, described Newlands’ actions as a “serious breach of trust,” emphasizing the gravity of his previous role as a teacher entrusted with the care of children. She remarked, “These offences are so serious that nothing other than an immediate custodial sentence will do.” As a result, Newlands was sentenced to 16 months in prison. Additionally, he was subjected to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and was ordered to register as a sex offender for the same period, reflecting the court’s concern for public safety and the protection of children in the community of Corby and beyond.
