STEVE NEVITT'S HORRIFIC CHILD RAPE CASE IN CUMBERNAULD AND GLASGOW

A man named Steven Nevitt, aged 48, has been convicted of multiple heinous sexual offenses against young girls in Cumbernauld, Lanarkshire, spanning from the late 1980s to the early 1990s. The details of his crimes reveal a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior that has left lasting scars on his victims.

Between 1991 and 1993, Nevitt targeted a young girl in Cumbernauld, where he was a teenager at the time. He subjected her to repeated sexual assaults, including raping her in a locked bathroom and later in her bedroom while he covered her mouth to prevent her from crying out. The girl vividly recalls the trauma, including a specific incident where she was eating a digestive biscuit after the assault. Nevitt’s predatory actions did not stop there; he also assaulted a younger girl, aged five or six, at the same property between 1989 and 1990. She remembers the incident clearly, especially the pain she experienced, and the fact that Nevitt pulled down his trousers and raped her while she was sleeping in her bedroom.

In 1997, Nevitt was previously sentenced to 30 months in prison for lewd and libidinous practices involving both a male and female child. Despite this, he continued to commit offenses against young girls, which only came to light many years later. It was only in 2022 that reports were made to the authorities, leading to Nevitt’s arrest and subsequent court proceedings. The charges he faced included two counts of child rape, to which he pleaded guilty today at the High Court in Glasgow.

The court heard harrowing details of the assaults. Prosecutor Vish Kathuria described how Nevitt, at the age of 16 or 17, attacked a girl aged 10 or 11 in a bathroom, locking the door behind him. He pushed her onto the floor, pulled down his trousers and pants, and covered her mouth with his hand before raping her. During the assault, Nevitt reportedly told her, “No one will believe you,” a statement that the girl believed was meant to silence her. The girl also recounted being raped multiple times in her bedroom while alone, and she admitted to blocking out the memories of these assaults to cope with the trauma.

Further disturbing details emerged about the younger girl, who was only five or six at the time. She recalled Nevitt, then aged 14 or 15, entering her bedroom while she was sleeping, holding a digestive biscuit, and then pulling down his trousers to rape her. She remembered feeling pain during the incident and sitting alone in her bed afterward, eating the biscuit Nevitt had brought. Both girls did not report these incidents to the police at the time, with the first reports only being made in 2022, which led to Nevitt’s arrest.

Following his guilty pleas, Nevitt’s sentencing was deferred to allow for background reports. He remains in custody and has been placed on the sex offenders register. Today, at the High Court in Glasgow, Lord Arthurson sentenced Nevitt to a total of 6 years and 9 months imprisonment for his historic child rape offenses. The judge emphasized the gravity of Nevitt’s crimes, noting that he was in a position of trust and that his actions caused lifelong psychological harm to his victims.

In his sentencing remarks, Lord Arthurson highlighted Nevitt’s extensive criminal record, which includes 62 previous convictions, five of which were at sheriff and jury level. His past also includes a 1997 conviction for lewd and libidinous practices, for which he served 30 months in prison. The judge acknowledged Nevitt’s remorse and the challenging background, including adverse childhood experiences and mental health issues, as detailed in psychiatric reports. Despite these mitigating factors, the court determined that the severity of his crimes warranted a substantial custodial sentence. Nevitt’s plea of guilty and his age at the time of offending were considered, but the court ultimately decided on the lengthy sentence to reflect the seriousness of his actions.

As part of his sentence, Nevitt will be subject to indefinite notification requirements under the Sexual Offences Act 2003, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct.
