STEVEN MALONE
Unbeknownst to him, the profile he contacted was managed by an undercover police officer.
During the hearing at Leeds Crown Court, Malone admitted to attempting to induce a girl into sexual acts and engaging in sexual communication with a minor.
Judge Timothy Clayson commented that Malone was fortunate not to face more serious charges, although these were not specified publicly.
Prosecutor Joe Culley explained that Malone operated two social media accounts and sent a private message to the profile in April of the previous year.
He inquired whether she liked older men and asked if she was on the pill to prevent pregnancy.
While she declined his invitation to meet in Leeds, Malone continued making lewd suggestions, including about oral sex.
The communication halted but resumed in August when Malone contacted her again from his second account, again initiating sexual discussions and inviting her to his home.
Malone was detained in September, denying any sexual interest in children.
The court was informed that he was homeless but had previously resided on Ainsley Mews in Stanks.
Defense lawyer Ed Youlton stated that Malone pleaded guilty early and showed remorse, describing his feelings as shameful.
Judge Clayson responded sharply, indicating that such remorse was expected.
The judge also referenced a probation report where Malone claimed no sexual interest, dismissing his explanation as unbelievable and unpersuasive.
He sentenced Malone to a three-year community order with strict supervision, mandated a 30-day rehabilitation program, and required participation in the Building Choices program to address offending behavior.
Malone was also served with a 12-month order excluding him from his former residence, a sexual harm prevention order, and inclusion on the sex offender registry for five years.
