STEVEN GOWLAND FROM STANHOPE AND WEARDALE JAILED FOR DISTURBING COLLECTION OF CHILD INDECENT IMAGES

In a case that has shocked the local communities of Stanhope and Weardale, Steven Gowland, a man with a deeply disturbing interest in children, was sentenced to a total of three years and two months behind bars. The court heard that Gowland had amassed an extensive and troubling collection of indecent images of minors, primarily obtained through online sources. Some of these images were genuine photographs, while others were pseudo-images, artificially created to depict children in compromising situations, which added to the severity of his offenses.

Durham Crown Court was informed that Gowland’s disturbing activities extended beyond mere collection. Using a split-screen technique, he superimposed images of children in ballet and ice-skating costumes over footage of himself engaging in sexual acts with a life-sized rubber doll. This method of digital manipulation highlighted the extent of his deviant interests and the disturbing nature of his material.

Prosecutor Richard Bennett detailed that police investigations uncovered hours of footage recorded covertly by Gowland. These recordings, taken from roadside locations while Gowland was parked in his vehicle, depicted children playing innocently. Mr. Bennett emphasized that the volume and content of some footage were so extensive that it could almost be classified as surveillance, with Gowland providing commentary and making lewd suggestions while secretly filming children.

Authorities acted on intelligence that led to a police raid on Gowland’s residence in Stanhope, Weardale, on May 25 of the previous year. During the search, officers seized a significant amount of digital media, including computer equipment, CDs, DVDs, and other storage devices. Gowland was subsequently arrested and initially claimed that he viewed adult pornography, asserting that he was not attracted to material involving children or animals. However, during questioning, he hesitantly admitted that some images of children might have been present in his collection simply because they were accessible to him.

A detailed examination of the seized media revealed a staggering total of 5,196 indecent images of children. These included both still photographs and videos, with 400 of the images classified in the most serious categories of such material. Gowland was re-interviewed, during which he acknowledged having a sexual interest in children but expressed surprise at the sheer volume of images he possessed.

On December 9, Gowland, aged 56 and residing on Martin Street in Stanhope, pleaded guilty to 26 charges related to the possession and distribution of indecent images and footage. Since his arrest, he has been held in custody. His legal representative, Rachael Landin, described him as an “introverted and isolated man,” who now feels profound shame and embarrassment over his actions. She explained that his initial interest stemmed from accessing mainstream pornography, but that images of children occasionally appeared, which he viewed out of curiosity. Importantly, she emphasized that Gowland did not distribute any of the material he collected or created.

Ms. Landin also noted that Gowland is scheduled to undergo a sexual offender treatment program during his imprisonment. Judge Christopher Prince, presiding over the case, sentenced Gowland to the prison term and made it clear that his preoccupation with child sexual material was deeply troubling. The judge described some of the material as “defying categorization” and “disturbing in nature.”

Furthermore, Gowland is already subject to lifelong registration as a sex offender. The court will determine the terms of a sexual offences prevention order at a subsequent hearing, aimed at preventing any future offenses and protecting the community from further harm.
