ASHFORD COUPLE STEVEN AND AMELIA COLEMAN SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC SEXUAL ABUSE AND DEPRAVITY
In a case that has shocked the community of Ashford, a couple identified as Steven Coleman, aged 41, and his wife Amelia Coleman, aged 29, have been convicted and sentenced for their involvement in heinous acts of sexual abuse against children. The court proceedings revealed a disturbing pattern of depravity that has left a lasting scar on the victims and the local community alike.Steven Coleman was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 12 years before he can be considered for parole. The judge, Jeremy Carey, described him as a man with “perverted tendencies and a gross personality disorder,” emphasizing the severity of his crimes and his continued danger to children. The judge also noted that if a fixed-term sentence had been imposed, it would have been 18 years. The court found that Coleman’s actions demonstrated a complete denial of the gravity of his offenses and a lack of remorse.
Amelia Coleman received a sentence of nine years in prison. While the judge acknowledged that she did not initiate the abuse, he stated that she was a “willing participant” in the crimes. She is expected to serve at least half of her sentence before being eligible for parole, though it is unlikely she will be released until she has served two-thirds of her term. Both individuals were ordered to register as sex offenders and are prohibited from working with children in any capacity.
During the trial, which lasted three weeks, the jury at Maidstone Crown Court deliberated for just over seven hours before reaching their verdicts. The court heard graphic video evidence from the victims, which played a crucial role in establishing the extent of the abuse. The couple faced a total of 15 charges, with Amelia Coleman being cleared of one charge related to possessing indecent images of children. However, the jury convicted them on all other counts, including charges of possessing indecent photographs, rape, indecent assault, and indecency with a child.
Prosecutor Johanna Cutts revealed that police searches of the Colemans’ former residence in Bredgar Close, Stanhope, Ashford, uncovered over 100 obscene films. Files had been deleted from their computer, and the system had been reformatted, but forensic experts managed to recover evidence indicating access to child pornography. The investigation uncovered a disturbing pattern of exploitation and abuse that had been meticulously hidden.
Defense attorneys for Steven Coleman argued that he had been subjected to threats while in custody, claiming he was told he “will be got” regardless of which prison he was sent to. Meanwhile, Tanya Robinson, representing Amelia Coleman, described her client as a victim of domestic violence, stating she had been beaten by her husband in what was described as a “controlling relationship.” The court was informed that the couple had not had any contact while in prison, and Robinson remarked that Amelia now felt more free than she had when living with Steven outside.
Judge Carey concluded the sentencing by emphasizing the profound and lasting impact of the crimes, stating, “The long-term effect of this sexual depravity cannot at this stage be measured.” The case has left a dark stain on the community of Ashford, and the court’s verdict aims to serve justice for the victims and protect others from potential harm in the future.
