SHOCKING CRIME: STEPHEN SPENCER OF GLASTONBURY SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS FOR CHILD RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Glastonbury, Stephen Spencer, a 37-year-old resident of Tor View Avenue, was handed down a severe prison sentence of 18 years after being convicted on multiple serious charges involving child sexual abuse. The sentencing took place at Taunton Crown Court on Wednesday, February 13, following a lengthy legal process that highlighted the gravity of his crimes.Spencer’s case was deemed so serious that magistrates, in a prior hearing in August 2018, decided it was necessary to escalate the proceedings to the higher court in Taunton. The court heard that Spencer was found guilty of five counts of raping a girl under the age of 13, a crime that has profoundly impacted the victims and their families. Additionally, he was convicted of sexually assaulting another girl under the age of 13. These convictions underscore the disturbing nature of his offenses and the breach of trust involved.
However, Spencer was acquitted of two counts of sexual assault involving a girl over the age of 13, indicating that the evidence did not support those particular charges beyond a reasonable doubt. Despite this, the court’s focus remained on the heinous crimes committed against the underage victims.
As part of his sentencing, the judge ordered Spencer to be placed on the sex offenders register for life, a measure designed to monitor and restrict his activities to protect the community. Furthermore, he was issued a sexual harm prevention order that will remain in effect indefinitely, imposing restrictions aimed at preventing any future offenses. The case has left a lasting impact on the community of Glastonbury, highlighting the importance of justice for vulnerable victims and the ongoing efforts to safeguard children from sexual exploitation.
