REDCAR MAN JAILED FOR CHILD MOLESTATION IN DEVASTATING COURT CASE
A sex offender has been sentenced after finally facing justice for crimes committed against a young girl many years ago.Stephen Pearson, aged 59, was convicted by a jury of two counts of indecent assault following a trial at Teesside Crown Court.
The court heard that Pearson had taken advantage of a vulnerable young girl, repeatedly molesting her when she was a child.
Prosecutor Christopher Dunn emphasized the lasting impact of Pearson's actions, stating: "It wouldn’t be wrong to say that her life has been forever blighted as a result of this abuse." Pearson, who lived in Fulmerton Crescent, Redcar, denied the charges and caused the victim to relive her trauma by giving evidence.
He also attempted to discredit her, claiming she was a fantasist and a liar seeking financial gain.
The jury rejected these defenses, and Pearson was found guilty of the sexual assaults, which marked his first offenses.
The case coincided with his brother John Pearson, 62, from Loftus, being sentenced to 24 years in prison for a series of sex crimes including rape and indecent assault against three girls.
Judge Simon Bourne-Arton QC recognized Pearson's previous abuse had caused significant damage, although noted that Pearson had led a decent life since then.
He commented: “Her life was ruined from a very early age,” and highlighted that Pearson did not act impulsively but took advantage of the victim.
Pearson was sentenced to four and a half years in prison and received a ten-year restraining order, which prohibits him from contacting the victim.
He will also remain on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely.
His defense lawyer, Michael Bosomworth, argued that Pearson was a different man compared to his past and emphasized there was no suggestion of any future offending, asserting: “He has led a decent, honourable, hard-working life, otherwise an upstanding member of the community.” However, the judge made it clear that the damage caused by the abuse had been profound and irreversible.
