REDCAR MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO ASSAULT AND PROPERTY DAMAGE DURING DRUNKEN RAMPAGE
A man terrorised his ex-girlfriend when their relationship ended after six years, magistrates were told yesterday.
Ian Hewitt, 30, wrecked the flat he used to share with Emma Stirk and their two children, smashing windows, doors and fittings, said Alan Rutter, prosecuting.
She and four friends were frightened by his drunken rampage in West Road, Loftus, at about midnight on October 1, last year.
One of them told police later: "He was simply going mad and the whole atmosphere was very frightening," Teesside magistrates heard.
Passer-by Janet Gatenby, 51, rushed to their aid when she heard the commotion from the flat.
But Mrs Gatenby, whose son was Miss Stirk's new boyfriend, was flung to the floor by Hewitt.
Hewitt, now of Roseberry Road, Redcar, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, two charges of criminal damage and two of possessing cannabis resin, which police found at his home.
Hewitt was put on probation for 18 months and he was ordered to pay £192 compensation.
