VIOLENT PARTNER JAILED FOR BRUTAL KNIFE MURDER
A victim of domestic abuse was tragically murdered when her violent partner fatally stabbed her with a knife she carried for self-defense.Gail Lucas, aged 51, sustained severe cut wounds to her neck as she fought to protect herself inside her car during the assault carried out by her long-term partner, Stephen Maynard.
After the attack, Maynard left her in the vehicle, where she was discovered by a bystander who called emergency services.
Ms.
Lucas passed away in hospital ten days later.
In the months prior, she had been relocated to a safe house after Maynard repeatedly ignored court injunctions aimed at preventing him from approaching or threatening her.
Maynard pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 14 years.
Leeds Crown Court learned that the couple had been together since the 1980s and shared two adult children.
Mrs.
Lucas ended the relationship in 2011 due to his ongoing violence.
Neil Davey, QC, explained that the attack occurred in the early hours of August 4, after Mrs.
Lucas attended a party and drove to Maynard’s residence in Mexborough Grove, Chapeltown, Leeds.
It was also revealed that Mrs.
Lucas carried a small craft knife as protection against Maynard because she feared for her life.
Judge Peter Collier QC, the Recorder of Leeds, sentenced Lucas and stated: “It is probable that she drew the knife in self-defense, which Maynard then seized and used to attack her with savage and deadly force.” Following the sentencing, Detective Inspector Jon Morgan of West Yorkshire Police commented: “Maynard inflicted severe injuries during a prolonged attack on Gail Lucas as she sat in her car and then abandoned her.
A member of the public found her and called for an ambulance, but despite medical efforts, she died ten days later.
“While the exact motive remains unclear, Maynard was her ex-partner, and there was a history of domestic violence, harassment, and abuse.
Gail was a mother of three, and her family is deeply distressed by her sudden and violent death.”
