STEPHEN HENLY FROM COLDEN COMMON SENTENCED FOR DECADES OF ABUSE IN SOUTHAMPTON
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Stephen Henly, a 73-year-old resident of Colden Common, was convicted of a prolonged history of sexual abuse against a young girl during the 1990s. The abuse, which spanned several years, reached its most heinous point when Henly raped his young victim, leaving lasting scars that continue to affect her to this day.According to court proceedings, Henly’s predatory behavior began shortly after the death of his wife, with reports indicating that he started abusing the girl within days of her burial. The court heard that Henly would often reward the victim with alcohol following his assaults, further complicating her trauma and complicating her path to recovery.
The case was brought before Southampton Crown Court, where the severity of the psychological damage inflicted upon the victim was laid bare. The court was told that she now suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, relying on anti-depressants to manage her nightmares and emotional distress. Prosecutor Simon Jones read an impact statement to the court, describing how the victim “does not sleep at night as she has horrible, disgusting dreams.”
Mr. Jones further explained that the victim’s mental health has been severely compromised, with her experiencing feelings of being trapped, low self-esteem, and a pervasive sense of worthlessness. The court heard that she had even overdosed at one point, highlighting the profound psychological harm caused by Henly’s actions.
Despite denying one count of rape and ten charges of indecent assault on a minor, Henly was found guilty after a trial. Throughout the proceedings, Henly maintained his innocence, as noted by his legal representatives. The judge, Christopher Parker QC, did not accept his claims, stating, “You began this offending within days of your wife being buried,” and emphasizing the ongoing and frequent nature of the abuse.
Henly, who resides at Glen Mobile Home Park in Colden Common, was sentenced to a total of 16 years in prison. The court also ordered that he serve at least half of that sentence before being eligible for release on license. Additionally, a sexual harm prevention order was imposed, which will remain in effect until further notice, aiming to prevent any future offenses.
As part of the sentencing, it was made clear that Henly’s actions have caused irreparable harm to his victim, and the community continues to grapple with the impact of this case. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and safeguarding vulnerable individuals from predatory behavior.
