ARMAGH MAN STEPHEN DESMOND NUGENT FACES SERIOUS CHILD INDECENCY CHARGES IN NEWRY

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Armagh, Stephen Desmond Nugent, a local resident, is facing grave allegations involving the creation and possession of indecent images of children. The charges against Nugent are set to be heard in Crown Court later this year, following a preliminary hearing held at Armagh Magistrates’ Court, which is situated in Newry.

During the hearing, Nugent appeared via videolink from his solicitor’s office, showing no opposition to the proceedings. The court was informed of the serious nature of the allegations, which include seven counts of making indecent photographs, five counts of possessing a prohibited image of a child, and two additional counts of possessing indecent images. These alleged offences are said to have occurred over a span of more than three years, from September 22, 2015, to October 4, 2018.

The prosecution presented evidence indicating that there is a prima facie case against Nugent, meaning there is enough initial evidence to justify moving forward to a full trial. Deputy District Judge Philip Mateer reviewed the evidence and confirmed that the case should proceed to the next stage. Nugent was granted bail following the hearing, and he is scheduled to appear before Newry Crown Court on June 1 for his formal arraignment.
