STEPHEN BROWN FROM ON-TRENT SENTENCED AFTER CHILD SEX OFFENCES AND INDECENT IMAGES DISCOVERY

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community, Stephen Brown, a man with ties to On-Trent, faced the courts following a series of disturbing allegations involving child exploitation and possession of indecent images. The proceedings took place at Croydon Crown Court, where Brown appeared on a Monday to face multiple charges related to his online activities and inappropriate conduct.

Brown, aged 37, pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children, possessing extreme pornography, and inciting or causing a child to engage in sexual activity. The court was informed that Brown, a former lorry driver, had used the Kik social media messaging platform in May 2015 to initiate contact with an individual he believed was a 13-year-old girl, whom he referred to as Lauren.

During the investigation, it was revealed that Brown, who at the time resided in Milner Close, Caterham, had discovered her age and responded with inappropriate comments, stating, "I like young girls they look sexy." He then requested photographs from her, expressing a desire to see if she looked "HOT." His messages grew more suggestive, and he asked her to send images, including one of her wearing knickers. Brown also inquired about meeting her in person, despite the illegal implications of such an encounter, and made comments indicating he was aware of the potential legal consequences, saying, "Even though it could be classed as illegal what we do" and joking about the police, stating, "The old bill would lock me up x lol."

Further into their online conversations, Brown's messages became increasingly explicit. He urged her to delete their messages to avoid detection and, on June 18, 2015, sent two photographs of himself—one showing his naked torso and another depicting an erect penis with a pair of legs resting on a duvet. These images were confirmed by the National Crime Agency (NCA) to have been sent from Brown’s mobile phone. When questioned initially, Brown denied any involvement, claiming he did not know about the images or the conversations. However, during a subsequent interview, he admitted that the images were indeed his and that he had taken them himself, attempting to shift blame onto someone else for the use of his phone.

Authorities found multiple devices at Brown’s residence, including mobile phones and a tablet, which contained evidence of the online exchanges and a collection of indecent images of children. The images were categorized into various levels of severity, with one being classified as Category A—the most serious—alongside six Category B images, 57 Category C images, and one extreme image.

On July 24, Brown was sentenced at Croydon Crown Court to 21 months in prison, suspended for two years. Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for 15 years, and a sexual harm prevention order was imposed for the same period. The court also mandated that he attend a 30-day rehabilitation program, complete 200 hours of community service, and pay costs amounting to £500. A related charge of attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming was left on file, indicating ongoing concerns about his conduct.
