SIMONE MAUGHAN FROM BOLSOVER FACES JUSTICE FOR CRUELTY TO DOGS AND REPTILE

Simone Maughan, a woman originally from Westlea in Clowne and currently residing on Scarsdale Street in Bolsover, Chesterfield S44 6JW, was found guilty of multiple animal welfare violations in a case that has drawn significant attention from local authorities and animal rights organizations. The incident involved the severe neglect of two Staffordshire Bull Terrier-type dogs, named Zena and Lola, who were mother and daughter. These dogs were discovered in a deplorable state, confined within a small, cramped cage located in the kitchen of Maughan's residence.

The case came to light after a concerned member of the public reported the situation to the RSPCA, prompting an investigation. Inspector Helen Mead responded to the call and arrived at the address to find the two dogs in a critically emaciated condition. The animals were so undernourished that their bones were prominently visible, a clear sign of prolonged starvation and neglect. Despite their frail state, the dogs displayed a friendly demeanor, which underscored the distressing nature of their treatment.

In addition to the dogs, Inspector Mead discovered a bearded dragon lizard in the living room. The reptile was found without any source of light or heat, conditions that left it perilously close to death. Recognizing the urgent need for intervention, the inspector immediately arranged for the animals to receive emergency veterinary care. Thanks to the efforts of the RSPCA, all three animals have since recovered from their ordeal and are now in the care of animal welfare professionals.

Inspector Mead expressed her concern about the case, stating, “I was really worried when I saw how frail the dogs were with all their bones protruding, they were in a very poor condition but were so friendly. Through normal feeding, they were able to return to their healthy body weight. But it could have been so different if this situation had been allowed to continue. There is no excuse not to provide the basics of food and water for pets so anyone who is struggling should ask for help at an early stage.”

During the court proceedings at Chesterfield Magistrates’ Court, Maughan, who now resides in Creswell, pleaded guilty to three animal welfare offences. The court also heard that she was suffering from depression at the time of the neglect and that she had a history of good character prior to these incidents. In her defense, her mental health struggles were acknowledged as a mitigating factor.

The court sentenced Maughan to 40 hours of unpaid community work and ordered an eight-day rehabilitation program. Additionally, she was required to pay £300 in costs and a £150 victim surcharge. Furthermore, she received a five-year ban from keeping any animals, a restriction that will remain in effect until September 2024. The case highlights the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of neglect, serving as a reminder that basic care and compassion are essential for all pets.
