EMMA BLUFF FROM BOLSOVER SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC ANIMAL NEGLECT IN CHESTERFIELD

Emma Bluff, a resident of Valley Cottages on Sherwood Street in Bolsover, Chesterfield, has been convicted of severe animal neglect that resulted in the suffering and eventual euthanasia of her elderly dog, Molly. Born around 1976, Bluff appeared at Chesterfield magistrates’ court to face charges related to the neglect of her 11-year-old Akita/Staffy cross.

According to reports, the case came to light after a tip-off from concerned members of the public, prompting RSPCA Inspector Mick Darling to visit Bluff’s residence. Upon inspection, Inspector Darling discovered the dog in a dire state, with her fur missing in large patches due to a severe flea infestation that had gone untreated for at least six months. The condition of Molly was so grave that immediate veterinary intervention was necessary.

The veterinarian who examined Molly described her as being covered in fleas, with inflammation and sores across her head, neck, muzzle, and legs. The infestation had caused the dog to scratch and bite herself, leading to numerous injuries and infections. The collar Molly wore was so heavily infested and fouled by fleas that it could not be removed without cutting it off. The neglect had taken a toll on her health, especially considering her advanced age.

Further examination revealed that Molly was underweight, with a growth at the base of her tail that had gone untreated. She was struggling to stand on her hind legs, and her claws were overgrown, with the front dew claws nearly piercing her legs. The dog also had sore feet, which were likely caused by standing in urine for extended periods. Her overall condition was critical, and her suffering was deemed to be severe.

Given her poor health and the extent of her suffering, the veterinarian made the compassionate decision to euthanize Molly. The vet explained that the flea infestation and neglect had led to her failing health, and that her quality of life was irreparably compromised. Inspector Darling commented on the case, stating, “Molly was in a terrible condition and was left like this for at least six months. Sadly, this case highlights how untreated skin conditions and allergies can cause painful and horrendous suffering. It is a pet owner’s duty to seek veterinary treatment.”

Emma Bluff pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to her dog. As part of her sentencing, she received a 16-week custodial sentence, which was suspended for 12 months. Additionally, she was ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work, pay a total of £450 in costs and charges, and was banned from keeping animals for five years, with the ban set to expire in September 2024.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the devastating consequences of neglecting animal welfare in Bolsover and Chesterfield.
