TAUNTON MAN BANNED FROM KEEPING ANIMALS AFTER DOG CRUELTY
A Somerset man who attacked his dog in front of onlookers has been sentenced to a five-year ban on keeping animals.
Simon Summerhayes, aged 28, from Lambrook Road in Taunton, was found guilty of cruelty to his Staffordshire bull terrier, Rossy, during a previous court hearing.
Magistrates also imposed a 100-hour community order, a three-month night-time curfew, and ordered him to pay £500 in costs.
The RSPCA was awarded custody of Rossy and is currently seeking a new home for the dog.
Witnesses testified during the trial that they observed Summerhayes punching Rossy in the head and kicking him in the ribs.
RSPCA Inspector Jo Daniel expressed her outrage, stating: 'It's obviously shocking and horrendous and I think the fact so many people from Taunton came forward wanting to make statements and come to court gives an indication of how people feel about someone beating their dog up in Taunton High Street.'
