SIMON MCDONALD FROM ECCLES SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AND CHILD ABUSE IMAGES
In July 2017, authorities uncovered disturbing evidence linking Simon McDonald, a resident of Eccles, to serious criminal activities involving child exploitation. The case came to light when police officers responded to a call at the Eccles hostel where McDonald was residing. During their investigation, they discovered that McDonald, who was under strict legal restrictions due to his previous convictions, was engaging in illicit activities using two smartphones.McDonald, aged 39, was on licence from prison at the time, and his mobile phone usage was closely monitored by the Greater Manchester Police’s sex offender management unit. Despite the restrictions, officers learned that he was actively communicating with a network of other offenders, discussing the molestation of very young children. Furthermore, they found that he was involved in the distribution of highly disturbing images of child abuse, which had been downloaded from the internet.
The police executed a search of McDonald’s room on July 26 of the previous year. During the search, they recovered two smartphones. One of these devices had been hidden under a duvet, indicating an attempt to conceal evidence. However, the officers found that McDonald had made little effort to hide his latest offences. On both phones, the screensavers displayed indecent images of children, a clear violation of his legal restrictions.
In total, authorities discovered approximately 1,700 indecent images and 58 chat logs containing perverted conversations. These findings highlighted the extent of McDonald’s involvement in child exploitation activities. The investigation also revealed that McDonald had a prior conviction dating back to 2004 for engaging in sexual activity with an underage girl. Six years later, he was convicted again for possessing child abuse imagery, which led to his imprisonment and the imposition of a sexual offences prevention order aimed at restricting his contact with children and his internet use.
Despite these legal measures, McDonald repeatedly breached the order. He continued to hoard and distribute sick material and even managed to befriend an unsuspecting single mother with two children, raising concerns about his ongoing threat to vulnerable individuals. Authorities now classify McDonald as posing a ‘high risk’ to children and an ‘imminent risk’ of causing serious harm to young females and children.
At Manchester Crown Court, Judge David Hernandez sentenced McDonald to forty months in prison. The judge emphasized that McDonald’s offences were ‘aggravated’ by the vulnerability and distress of the children depicted, the large volume of images recovered, his breach of licence conditions, and his involvement in a ‘network of distribution’. The case underscores the ongoing dangers posed by individuals like McDonald, who continue to violate legal restrictions and exploit the innocence of children for their own depraved purposes.
