SIMON HOBBS CAERPHILLY DOGS ABUSE SOUTH WALES CRUELTY

Simon Hobbs, a backyard breeder residing at 23 Davies Drive in Caerphilly, South Wales, has been found guilty of subjecting multiple dogs to neglect and inhumane treatment. Born on September 19, 1977, Hobbs’s actions came under scrutiny following a detailed investigation by Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Trading Standards team.

On February 8, 2024, Hobbs pleaded guilty to charges of causing unnecessary suffering to five dogs, including a pregnant Belgian Malinois. The case was initiated after authorities executed several warrants at his residence in June 2023, uncovering disturbing conditions that highlighted the extent of his neglect.

During the search, officers from Trading Standards and Gwent Police, accompanied by a veterinarian, discovered six dogs confined within the cramped confines of Hobbs’ kitchen. Among these animals were three French bulldogs, each kept in a very small cage that offered little space for movement or comfort. The environment was overcrowded, with dogs sharing a single food tray and only two bowls of water, indicating a severe lack of proper care and hygiene.

One of the most distressing findings was a pregnant Belgian Malinois, who was significantly underweight. The poor condition of the dog raised immediate concerns about her health and the well-being of her unborn puppies. Remarkably, she gave birth to eight puppies just ten days after the discovery, underscoring the urgent need for intervention.

In addition to the Malinois, an Akita was found living in an outdoor lean-to wooden kennel exposed to direct sunlight. Temperatures recorded early in the day exceeded 26 degrees Celsius, surpassing the maximum temperature considered safe for dogs. The kennel lacked soft bedding or any form of enrichment, leaving the dog in a vulnerable and uncomfortable state.

Further examination revealed that three of the dogs were suffering due to a lack of veterinary care and proper management, which caused them unnecessary pain and distress. Recognizing the severity of the situation, authorities removed all the animals from Hobbs’ residence and transferred them into the care of Hope Rescue. The Malinois, now named Jinx, and her litter required intensive medical attention to ensure their survival.

Sara Rosser, Operations Manager at Hope Rescue Centre, expressed her concern and disappointment over the case. She stated, “We were pleased to be able to support the hard work of Caerphilly County Borough Council with this case. It was shocking to see so many dogs living in such awful conditions.

“The dogs needed vet treatment and specialist care — one of the dogs who especially touched and saddened us was the Malinois who we named Jinx. As well as being in an awful condition, she was pregnant. We were very concerned that she would not have the strength to give birth and care for her litter, but thanks to the hard work of the Hope Rescue Team, all eight puppies survived, and Jinx is now thriving.

“We are delighted that most of the dogs have already found loving new homes.”

In sentencing, Hobbs was ordered to pay a total of £8,388.73, covering fines, costs, and a surcharge. Additionally, he received a five-year ban from keeping any animals, a restriction that will remain in effect until February 2029.
