EAST LONDON MAN JAILED FOR STALKING AND RAPE
A 34-year-old waiter named Shohid Miah has been sentenced to prison after he admitted to stalking a vulnerable woman through the streets of Whitechapel and then raping her.The incident occurred on April 20 of the previous year, when he followed a visibly intoxicated woman around and approached her at approximately 10:30 pm.
He subsequently led her into a secluded area on Old Montague Street, where the assault took place.
CCTV footage captured Miah adjusting his clothing after the attack, which led staff monitoring the cameras to contact police.
Upon their arrival, officers found the victim distressed on the ground.
Miah was arrested on suspicion of rape and chose not to answer questions but instead provided a prepared statement claiming he was propositioned by the victim.
On March 11, Miah pleaded guilty at Snaresbrook Crown Court to two counts of rape and was sentenced to five years and four months in prison the following Thursday.
Detective Constable Denise Rutter from the Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command expressed her hope that the conviction would provide some comfort to the victim and encourage others to come forward.
