MENTAL HEALTH FAILINGS EXPOSED IN TRAGIC MURDER CASE
Dorothy Shepherd was tragically killed in 2010 by her stepson, Shea MacLean, during an unprovoked assault at their family home.MacLean, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, pleaded guilty to manslaughter based on diminished responsibility.
The attack was linked to his mental health issues, which family members later said had been more severe than initially disclosed.
An independent review later determined that the attack was not predictable, but it also criticized the mental health services for a series of mistakes and poor risk assessments.
Since that day, MacLean has been held under a restriction order under Section 41 of the Mental Health Act and continues to be detained in a secure mental health hospital.
The family voiced their sadness and feelings of betrayal, accusing the NHS of failing to provide warning about the potential for violence and criticizing the inadequate monitoring and flawed risk evaluation that contributed to the tragedy.
