SHOWN DYMOND FROM BUDE SENTENCED FOR DOWNLOAD OF CHILD INDECENT IMAGES IN TRURO
In November 2011, a man from Bude named Shawn Dymond was brought before Truro Crown Court to face serious charges related to the possession and download of indecent images of children. The court heard that Dymond, aged 42, had downloaded a total of 2,772 such images, which spanned various levels of severity, highlighting the disturbing nature of his offenses.Judge Christopher Elwen presided over the case and, after reviewing the evidence and Dymond’s guilty plea, decided that a custodial sentence would not be appropriate or effective in this situation. Instead, he imposed a community order, emphasizing the importance of rehabilitation and the need for specialized intervention in cases involving sexual offenses against children.
During the sentencing, Judge Elwen addressed Dymond directly, stating, "Offenders like you never truly grasp that children who are too young to know are likely to be coerced, either through drugs, threats or actual violence, to participate in these very disgusting practices. The chances are they suffer long-term psychological and physical harm."
Shawn Dymond, who resides on Monterey Close in Bude, appeared in court for sentencing after earlier pleading guilty to ten charges related to the possession and downloading of these images. The images included a range of seriousness, with 2,235 classified as level one, the lowest, and 11 at level five, the most severe. The remaining images fell into levels two, three, and four, with 73, 233, and 220 images respectively.
His defense lawyer, Rupert Taylor, described the case as a "sad case" and highlighted that Dymond was a man of previously good character who was experiencing health issues and was reliant on benefits. Despite these mitigating factors, the court took a firm stance on the seriousness of the offenses.
As part of his sentence, Dymond will be subject to probation supervision for three years. Additionally, he was issued a sexual offences prevention order and required to register as a sex offender for five years. The court also ordered him to contribute £250 towards prosecution costs. This case underscores the ongoing efforts to address and prevent the distribution of harmful material involving children, with authorities emphasizing the importance of community safety and offender accountability.
