SHANNON MARZ FROM BATH SENTENCED AFTER HORRIFIC ANIMAL CRUELTY CASE INVOLVING RABBITS AND CATS
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Bath, Shannon Marz, also known as Shannon Marz-Coggins, born in December 1965, faced justice for her neglectful treatment of multiple animals kept at her residence on Edgar Buildings, George Street, Bath BA1 2EE. The case came to light after RSPCA inspectors responded to concerns about animal welfare at her property in Chelwood, near Bath, on Monday, April 1, 2023.Upon entering the premises, investigators discovered a grim scene: a total of eight animals, including six rabbits and two cats, were found living in deplorable conditions. Tragically, one rabbit was already dead by the time of the inspection, and two others had to be euthanized due to their severe health issues. The remaining animals were suffering from neglect that had gone unchecked for too long.
The cats, including one named Lord Melbourne, exhibited clear signs of suffering. Lord Melbourne had an untreated facial infection, with blood visible on the inside of his collar, indicating a lack of proper veterinary care. The cats were confined in a bathroom that was stained with urine, further highlighting the unsanitary environment they endured.
The rabbits, each with their own names—Rosie, Noah, Jeremiah, Gingerbread, Delilah, and Moses—were found in a state of significant distress. They suffered from various health problems, including overgrown nails, chronic eye infections, respiratory issues, and ear ailments. The cages housing them were alarmingly small, with some measuring only 60 centimeters, and were stacked on top of each other, providing no adequate space for movement or exercise.
Investigators noted the absence of any outdoor or larger enclosed areas where the animals could engage in natural behaviors such as digging or foraging. The bedding within the cages was wet and emitted a strong ammonia smell, indicating poor hygiene and neglect. In her defense, Marz claimed she had kept the rabbits caged for a week due to her moving house, but this explanation did little to mitigate the severity of her neglect.
Following a trial, Shannon Marz was found guilty of seven animal welfare offences. Her sentencing took place at North Somerset Magistrates Court on July 30, 2024. The court handed down an 18-week prison sentence, which was suspended for one year, along with a fine of £1,500 to cover investigation and care costs. Additionally, Marz was banned from keeping any pets for ten years, a restriction that will remain in effect until August 2034.
RSPCA Inspector Jo Daniel, who was involved in the investigation, emphasized the importance of proper care for all animals. She stated, “All rabbits, including those living indoors, need a safe and clean environment with suitable enrichment. They require a comfortable place to rest undisturbed. Living in a cold, draughty, or wet environment can cause suffering. Rabbits also need a place to hide and feel secure. Without this, they can experience anxiety and stress, which may lead to illness.”
