SHANE SIMPSON FROM KIRKBY STEPHEN JAILED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING SCHOOLGIRLS IN APPLEBY

In February 2019, Shane Simpson, who was then residing in Lynemouth, Northumberland, was involved in a criminal case that drew significant attention. The incident, however, dates back to October 2010, when Simpson was living in Kirkby Stephen, a small town known for its close-knit community and scenic surroundings.

Simpson, aged 20 at the time of sentencing, was convicted of engaging in inappropriate relationships with two underage girls from Appleby. The court proceedings revealed that Simpson had developed a troubling pattern of behavior involving minors, which ultimately led to his imprisonment. During his trial at Carlisle Crown Court, Simpson was sentenced to three years in prison. Additionally, he was placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely, a measure designed to monitor and restrict his future contact with minors.

Furthermore, Simpson was banned from having any unsupervised contact with girls under the age of 16 for a period of five years. The court's decision underscored the seriousness of his offenses and the need to protect vulnerable minors from potential harm.

Details of the case indicated that Simpson, who was 19 years old at the time he knew the two 13-year-old girls, pleaded guilty to multiple charges. He admitted to engaging in sexual activity with one girl on two separate occasions—once in a woodland area at Kirkby Thore and another time at a birthday celebration. The second girl was also involved in an inappropriate relationship with Simpson, although they did not engage in sexual acts.

Prosecutor Kim Whittlestone explained that the two girls had met Simpson independently of each other. The first girl was introduced to him through her then-boyfriend and gradually developed a relationship with Simpson via Facebook, the popular social networking site. Despite warnings from her mother about the significant age difference and concerns over Simpson’s intentions, the relationship continued. The girl confided in her school nurse about her fears of pregnancy, which prompted school authorities to alert the police.

In her testimony, Ms. Whittlestone highlighted that Simpson’s interactions with the second girl were also intimate, though they did not culminate in sexual activity. The court heard that Simpson’s behavior was a breach of trust and a violation of the law designed to protect minors.

Defense counsel Alison Whalley argued that both girls were aware of Simpson’s age, and that he was also aware of theirs. She emphasized that Simpson recognized his mistake and expressed remorse, acknowledging that he should have taken responsibility and refrained from such conduct.

Judge Paul Batty QC delivered the sentence, stating, “I accept that both girls were willing but the law dictates – perfectly rightly in my view – that children ought to be protected even against themselves. You took advantage of your age and what you considered to be your streetwise credibility.” The judge’s remarks underscored the importance of safeguarding minors and the gravity of Simpson’s actions, which led to his incarceration and registration as a sex offender.
